After a long day of packing and cleaning and errands and more packing we are almost ready to hit the open roads! Almost everything is set, and we should be able to leave right after rush hour tomorrow.
Tomorrow's goal is to get to Lone Pine, California, just north of the Mohave Desert, a little more than half-way to our daughter Carol's house in Incline Village (Lake Tahoe). We normally make that drive to Tahoe in one day, but pulling a trailer for almost 500 miles doesn't make sense, so we'll go half way. Besides, it's Steve's birthday, and it isn't fair to make him spend it either driving or watching me drive. Although, come to think of it, it makes up for one time on vacation when we stayed up all night on the ferry to New Foundland on my birthday!
One worrisome development is that Tahoe is covered with smoke from the fires in Sacramento. Carol is monitoring the situation and will call us tomorrow with an update. We haven't seen her in a long time, so I hope we can still go. If it's really bad, maybe we'll stay in the valley and meet up with her down there. Hopefully the wind will shift by Friday. The fires are really bad this year and there probably won't be any rain for months. Prayers needed!
We just had a call from our friends the Cowie's in Columbia, MD, and set up a brunch date with them while we're in the DC area. We haven't seen them in many years, so we're looking forward to it. And, because the place where we are meeting them, a wonderful-sounding private club in Washington, DC, is formal, the iron question is officially settled, and the iron is going with us. But no ironing board. And no starch! Enough is enough!
So wish us Bon Voyage!
I'll try to keep this blog updated, and hopefully will have some interesting pictures to share with everyone.
